Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea can have terrible long term health consequences. It has been associated with heart attacks, stroke, high blood pressure, heart arrhythmias, and diabetes. In obstructive sleep apnea, the upper airway becomes blocked during the night and this results in a significant decrease or a complete cessation in breathing. Common symptoms of sleep apnea include snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, morning headache, daytime sleepiness and fatigue, and frequent awakenings at night.

Central Sleep Apnea

Central Sleep Apnea is associated with heart failure, heart arrhythmias, strokes, or medications. Patients with central sleep apnea have pauses in breathing when the central nervous system fails to tell the body to breath. Central sleep apnea can contribute to pulmonary hypertension and worsens the prognosis of patients with heart failure.


Narcolepsy can be a very disabling disorder. Patients with narcolepsy may become sleepy during various daytime activities despite the fact that they have had an adequate amount of sleep at night. The sleepiness can quickly become so severe that the patient is no longer able to fight it. They sometimes have periods of sudden muscle weakness. These patients may also have dreamlike hallucinations, episodes of paralysis in bed, and disrupted nighttime sleep.


Insomnia is one of the most common and bothersome sleep disorders. Patients with insomnia have trouble falling or staying asleep or they may feel that their sleep is very light. Insomnia can result in daytime fatigue, sleepiness, irritability, and problems with concentration.


Parasomnias are undesirable physical events or experiences that occur during or around sleep. This can include sleep walking, night terrors, acting out dreams, or eating in sleep. These behaviors can sometimes lead to injuries during the night.

Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless Legs Syndrome can be a very frustrating disorder. Patients have an urge to move their legs when they are sitting or when they lie down. This urge may be accompanied by an unpleasant sensation. Moving the legs makes this urge go away for a few seconds or minutes, but it soon returns. This can make it difficult to fall asleep. Restless legs syndrome can be associated with iron deficiency.
